Ventosilla Castle was the first estate in Spain to organize driven shoots for red legged partridges back in 1864, by the Duke of Santona. His son the Count of Teba, nephew of HRH Queen Elisabeth II from England, continued the tradition which now has been inherited by his grandsons, who as in the past arrange this shoots with the same greatness and elegance.
The Castle, located 20 minutes from the ancient, original Roman Imperial city of Toledo and 1 hour drive from Madrid, your point of arrival, was built in the 16th century, as a hunting retreat for the wealthy and powerful Cardinals in Spain of Toledo. It has been enlarged and updated by the subsequent generations of the same family. The Castle and its gardens have been designed by the famous landscape designer Forestier, providing a backdrop that guarantees an unforgettable shooting day.
Guests enjoy 19 double bedrooms with en suite facilities, a large dining room and several living areas, all for the enjoyment of our shooting companions. A gun room also available to secure and clean your treasure.
Eduardo Araoz, owner of CAZATUR, is present during the entire program and will coordinate and facilitate all needs and requests of his guests. Join Eduardo and his staff soon to shoot the challenging red legged partridge in Spain.

Driven Red Legged Partridge Shooting;
Partridge drive shooting is certainly the main attraction of small game in Spain. It is worldwide known that the dream of every gun is the challenge of a covey of partridges flying swiftly in over the butt. No other bird game can provide such excitement.
It is at the end of the XIXth Century when partridge drives appear in Spain, reigning King Alphonse XIII, the best shooter of the time and the driving force behind this modality. In the early 1920´s this sport was already very popular within the most important Spanish estates.
Quintanar has been shooting partridges in for the last four generations. The property, holding centenary shrub oaks, gall oaks, pines, junipers and a varied orography broken by gullies, offer a changing landscape and a wide range of shooting situations making every drive different. Quintanar is a unique and privileged place for partridge shooting.

A Cazatur representative, will transfer the group back to Madrid to the airport, or to overnight in a hotel.
DAY 4; Transfer to the airport. Or if you are staying longer you will be driven to the airport to assist you on the clearing of your firearm when you leave Spain.
Cazatur will make sure you will experience the Spanish traditions with style. Being at the Ventosilla Castle or at the Quintanar Palace. Upon your arrival and after getting organized in your designated room, enjoy a welcome cocktail, serving Spanish wines as well as all international drinks, while enjoying typical Spanish “tapas” like; Jamón Iberico, manchego cheese and many others…
Continuing the Spanish shooting tradition every morning for breakfast, you will enjoy the famous “migas” (lightly fried bread crumbs) with fried eggs, Spanish chorizo and crispy bacon, orange juice, tea, coffee, and pastries are also available, or any other way of cooked eggs.
After breakfast, the drawing of the shooting position for the day is done following the “Tomeloff system”; were you draw a number for the day, which will make you move in or out of the numbered line in the drive two positions to the right every drive, in order for all shooters, to have access to the center of the drive as well as to the outside. This method also allows you, to change shooting neighbors throughout the day. After this, the shooting party is off to the surrounding shooting grounds.
Between drives, another tradition, is to offer you, The Taco; a time to visit with your friends and shooters about the previous drive, bid yellow each other, and get better acquainted, and while enjoying this moment, allow the beaters to move to the next location from where they are going to blink in the birds for the following drive.
Enjoy a glass of red or chilled white wine, sit for a moment, and relax while you visit with your old or new friend, with whom you are experiencing this wonderful time, see the “secretarios” your assistants, bring in the retrieved birds from the drive. What can be nicer than having a delicious partridge broth, a sherry wine, a Spanish tortilla, some jamón ibérico, filled sweet red peppers, olives, manchego cheese and all those delicious “tapas” Spain is famous for?
Lunch is served at an outdoor location and is a grand event surrounded by the Spanish countryside. It offers the chance to visit about the mornings drives and enjoy a break before the evening drives. The food is delicious served by attendants offering snacks (tapas), full meal with appropriate beverages and ambiance.
Dinners, are served in the main dining room, after a cocktail in the living room. We like to suggest at least one evening to dress up specially to allow the ladies in the line to “look pretty”. Cocktail attire, is good enough for that evening, so we can have pictures taken at a beautiful set table, and allow the men, enjoying a brandy and a cigar!
There are more than 40 different drives to be used, at the Ventosilla Castle shooting grounds and 20 at the Quintanar Palace. Many of the Castle drives have been used for a century and gained a reputation, because of the various factors of difficulty involved; (height of the incoming birds, wind influence, snap shots etc…), but most importantly each peg is perfectly situated to keep “safety in mind” by placing ich butt at a distance between them, so you are within sight of your shooting neighbors.
In Spain as you may know, your helper “secretario”, installs a shield on each side of your peg, which blinds you from seeing your neighbor while you are swinging your gun following an incoming bird. This shield will make you lift the gun out of the shooting line so safety is assured. Please help your “secretario” to place them properly on each drive.
Depending on the weather, time of the day, and dominating wind, the drives are chosen specifically each day. Between drives we always serve snacks and drinks, to give you time to visit about how you shoot your drive, with the rest of the line, and more important, to allow the beaters to move to the next location from where they are going to blink in the birds for the following drive.
For each drive we use 40 to 50 beaters perfectly uniformed with reflecting vests, so you can see them when they come close to the line of shooters. The shooting of each drive ends, after the blow of a horn by the beaters commander. After this horn blow, shooting stops inmediatelly, as the beaters will be within shooting range.
After having drawn the shooting position for the day, the shoot master will assign to you two men; your loader and an assistant, “secretarios”. These two very experience men, will be with you for the entire shooting program. Each shooting ground has its own personnel, so if you are going to shoot in our two different areas, there will be a change of “secretarios”.
The loader´s job is self explanatory and he will adjust the way you hand the empty gun to him while he places the newly loaded gun in your hand, wether you are right handed shooter, or a left handed one. Their experience comes after loading guns for shooters from all over the World, for more than 10 years. They appreciate, the quality of the guns they are handling, so you can be assured of a very professional and skilled person. At the end of any shooting day he will pass a “cleaning snake” through your tubes and will clean the dust of your gun with an oil impregnated cloth. Your guns will be kept in a secured gun room.
Your “secretario” is the man who will carry all you belongings, making sure you have not left behind any of it. He is also the man in charge of counting and later, with the help of the loader picking your downed birds. He keeps the count of you birds with a clicker, so you know at any time, what your count is. The shoot master will let him know which is your shooting position for each drive. and he will lead you to that place.
Driven Red Legged Partridge shoots are considered amongst the most challenging game bird there is in the World. We will present to the line of shooters every day, several thousands of birds with different flying patterns, which together with the height and speed (partridge can fly 40 miles an hour for a short period of time), they will fly over you, will challenge your shooting ability for the most memorable shoots you will ever experience.
We have prepared the butts, on each drive so the birds come in high, and strong. Challenge you to the more difficult birds to get full enjoyment of your shooting day. There are enough birds to fill your bag and exceed it, if you are willing to do so.
Red Legged Partridge shooting is done over four or five drives a day. On every drive there is a special moment of extreme action, do not be shy on cartridges (they are included), and shoot in front of you, forget the bird which is making you shoot in the back; the ACTION IS IN FRONT. If you have shot in Spain before, you know what I mean and if you are thinking of coming for the first time, make up your mind, come and enjoy the best shooting in the world under blue skies, warm weather, and great camaraderie.
Between drives during the day, following the Spanish tradition, we offer you a time to visit with your friends and shooters about the previous drive, bid yellow each other, and get better acquainted, and while enjoying this moment, allow the beaters to move to the next location from where they are going to blink in the birds for the following drive.
Enjoy a glass of red or chilled white wine, sit for a moment, and relax while you visit with your old or new friend, with whom you are experiencing this wonderful time, see the “secretarios” your assistants, bring in the retrieved birds from the drive. What can be nicer than having a delicious partridge broth, a sherry wine, a Spanish tortilla, some jamon ibérico, filled sweet red peppers, olives, manchego cheese and all those delicious “tapas” Spain is famous for?
Breathe in the fresh morning air, and in the middle of the shooting day gather in the lunch tent, by the Tajo River, or in the old game keeper´s house or next to a bullring, to enjoy Paella, or some other great typical Spanish meal.
Also known as “Tableau” it is a moment to present respect to your sport, to the people who have worked very hard for this successful day, to see in front of you the total bagged birds as per the contracted daily amount, a moment of pride for the shooters who have been able to accomplish this mark, and the perfect souvenir photo to be framed for your office, or a special place in your home.
It is a perfect way to close the sporting activity, while sharing a glass of wine in the Chill Out of the Castle yard, or at the Bullring building, or if you prefer enjoy a shower, before meeting for dinner, in your selected attire.
We at CAZATUR, have presented you with the best of our knowledge and hability, trying to exceed your expectations for the day (as we have been told many times). We would love to be able in the future, to try our best again, to have you back with us;

After this wonderful experience for both us we just can not thank you enough for your efforts to please all of us, your knowledge of your history and culture, which we have taken part through these 4 days and the most important part for us your attention to every detail as the best hunting host we have ever had. I personally have enjoyed shooting Red Legged Partridge very much, this is a dream come true for any bird hunter. We will be back.
Ronnie & Carole Boyd; TX October 2005
Another year and another great experience with you my friend. As always everything went smooth and perfect. We loved the Ventosilla Castle, it was our first time and we were surprised of such a nice place full of so much history. The shooting went fine, this has been our 10th Red Legged Partridge shooting with you and you know that it is not the last. Thank you, your family in Houston.
Bob & Gay Rod; TX October 2005
Eduardo, as usual the best of hospitality, the best of food and wine, the best of friendship and the best of hunting. The Partridges are definitely the most challenging birds that I have ever shot and this combined with the luxury of the accommodations the unique Spanish cuisine that we like so much and the wines, makes me affirm that I will be back. Thank you for everything, I strongly recommend this trip to anybody.
Max & Gayle Dillard; TX October 2005
Your care and great attention to your clients needs was much appreciated. We feel we have new friends in Spain and you have new ones in Texas. Our first Red Legged Partridge was wonderful; it will be difficult not to come back. We appreciate your staff and love the history and people of Spain. Thank you very much for this amazing trip.
Mr. & Mrs. Bashams; TX October 2005

Sharing your beautiful country, history and culture with good friends and shooting Red Legged Partridges, it has been above our expectations. The accommodations, the food the wines and your staff made our time in Spain a very special one that we will never forget. We hope to be back soon.

The quality of the hunt was better than we had expected. Having been a guide in Mexico for the past 30 years, I know and understand quality… Effort is a very important part of any organization and your continuous effort during the hunt was well defined. We will return…

Everything was far above my expectations: Strong, high flying birds, deluxe atmospheric accommodations, excellent food, wine and service. I strongly recommend this shooting, cultural, touring, gastronomic and friendship experience to anybody. I will return…

To our new Spanish friends: We feel we were exposed to the “real” Spanish customs, both social and hunting. A truly wonderful event for us both and we will be back soon. Thank you very much, great shot, great food & wines, great hosts and a great country!!
Catherine & Randall Lawton; WI October 2000
Dear Eduardo & Paloma, you have figured out how to herd Americans with diplomacy, tact and style, thank you. The opportunity to shoot Red Legged Partridge in the Spanish style was a truly exciting experience and one I expect to repeat soon. It could easily become addictive. Thank you very much.
Liz & Don Hoffman; TX October 2000
When you visit Spain for the first time, you are correspond for the bless of the spirit in the land, the people, and the religion. To travel across Spain with Eduardo and with other friends from Texas is to rediscover the Mother Country. We loved the Red Legged Partridge, in my opinion; they are the most challenging Birds you can shoot. Thank you very much, we will return!!
Georgette & Guy Richards; TX November 2000

Another wonderful hunt, wines were excellent so was the food. Eduardo, our first trip to Spain was with you 20 years ago, and we come over and over whenever we can. It is one of our favourite countries, the fantastic weather of Spain shared with friends like you and also shooting Red Legged Partridge, it is the best reason for any hunter that wants to shoot the best birds and that wants to enjoy the finest accommodations, food and wine.
John & Betty Whitehouse; November 2000 (Repeat clients)
Again, a wonderful trip! You are truly one of the best hosts ever; your attention to details, your kindness, and your sincerity is much appreciated. The birds beautifully appreciated, plentiful, and extremely well presented. We will be back the next year for 4 days. Thank you very much.

The Spanish Government enforce some longstanding gun import regulations that call for a visitor to certify at a Spanish Consulate that he is a bona-finder hunter in his home country and also provide information about the gun he wants to import. The Consulate then issues an Official Document that has to be presented to the police at point of entry. Failure to jump through these hoops will result in having your gun impounded by customs and held until you leave Spain.
In order to receive these temporary gun import documents, you must contact the General Consulate of Spain in your region and submit to them: a notarized photocopy of your passport; a notarized photocopy of a valid hunting license; the literal translation in Spanish of that hunting license; a money order payable to the Consulate General of Spain, plus information regarding the hunting trip (dates and places, which will be provided by us). You´ll also need to include a self-addressed stamped envelope so they can send your import documents to you. You should do all of this well in advance of your departure, as it will take some time to process the paperwork. Following is a list of General Consulates of Spain in the US and their jurisdictions:
