Wild Sheep Foundation: Your Mission and Values
WSF’s goal is to drive the conservation and management of wild sheep in North America and Central Asia through several programs:
- Grant Funding: WSF directs some of its funding to a variety of wild sheep conservation and management programs.
- Wild sheep transplants: More than 22,000 wild sheep have been moved to the U.S. and Canada. The WSF and our team of affiliates have supported and participated in hundreds of wild sheep transplants, providing funding, manpower and critical political support to assist state and provincial agencies with wild sheep restoration efforts.
- Improvement of the habitat of wild sheep: Without the existence of a suitable habitat, wild sheep could not exist. WSF has always supported the improvement of the habitat of this species, contributing to the development of water, the control of harmful weeds and even the modification of fences.
- Use the best technology: With the funds raised, we invest in the best technology to control invasive herbs and some annual infestations.
- Supporting Disease Research: WSF has supported the Rocky Crate Chair for Wild Sheep Disease Research, at Washington State University in Pullman, WA. Research is being done on respiratory pathogens that sometimes cause pneumonia outbreaks in wild sheep and many die.
- Youth Education Programs: WSF offers shooting, hunting, and ethics education (SHEEP) programs and the Youth Wildlife Conservation Experience (YWCE). It is about living an outdoor quality experience in their communities of origin. These programs include hands-on teaching on wildlife, habitat, conservation, outdoor recreation, shooting sports, and more. Young people will enjoy a lot!
WSF has raised $115 million over 40 years and has achieved great achievements with it. Through wild sheep transplants, research, water development, predator management, educational outreach, and many other WSF initiatives, the number of Rocky Mountain, California, and desert sheep has tripled in North America.
